Great Rooms are unique to the 21st century as we have more space and access to adequate heating, making small rooms surrounding a fireplace for warmth less necessary. However, the kitchen has always been the hub of the house and a gathering place. So, it seems that combining the two areas is actually a natural progression back to our roots.
A properly designed Great Room can bring a family together and create the instant energy of home. Some things we make sure are present when we design a Great Room are an island with comfortable seating, a sizable lounge area, homework space if the layout allows, and even a smaller game table. We are noticing more people forgo televisions in this space, but that depends on the layout of the home and each families pastimes.
